As a marketing and management double major in the Robert H. Smith School of Business, I have an interest in marketing, digital advertising, and video production.  My goal is to develop, shoot, and edit promotional or personal videos for companies and individuals. After being accepted into the university’s Scholars Program I was immediately drawn to Media, Self, and Society.  I was unsure how to direct my college education in a way that would teach me skills that I could use in my future profession; however, I knew Media, Self, and Society would be an excellent start.  In only a year and a half of being in this program I feel so much more prepared and knowledgeable on my future path.  I was looking forward to learning about how different aspects of media worked, different professions in the field, skills and tips on good media creation.  As a Media Sophomore I have learned much more on these topics than I could have ever expected.  From guest speakers to learning about our professor’s own experience in the field, I was able to obtain a glimpse into my future field.

Last year I came into the university as a business undeclared major, developing interest in the marketing and advertising field.  I had an idea of what I wanted to do after college, but the confidence in this goal was not present.  My knowledge in the field was slim and I was not aware of all the options out there.  A major turning point in my confidence about my future was when we had the guest speaker, David Larson from Early Light Media, come talk to us.  David told us about his company, Early Light Media, based out of Baltimore Maryland, and what he did for his profession and in that moment it clicked.  That was what I wanted to do with my future.  Every aspect of his job was interesting to me and I began to have confidence in my own aspirations for my life.  Without Media, Self, and Society I would have never met David and never gained such early confidence with what I wanted to do with my college education.  I am very grateful for the experiences I have obtained as a result of this program and am always excited for what we will learn next!
